I have been raising hens on my own for going on two years! It's been so much fun! One addition I made to the flock was a valiant, dauntless, prince in shining feathers - rooster. The hens immediately fell in love with him! Though he crowed quite proudly in the mornings, I noticed he was actually quite a servant to these hens. In the mornings I would open up the hatch to let them out into their pen, and the rooster would wait until the hens got out first. He would also make sure every hen had first dibs on the food and scraps I would throw in. Every now and then, I let the chickens out to free range and when I do, I notice the rooster will go and find things for the hens to eat. He'll pick up a piece of grass and make little clucks until the hens run over to take it from him. He also is very protective, and attacks our dog, Pippin, when she harasses the hens.
Maybe I think too much, or am a little obsessed with chickens, but I thought this is a great lesson for me. I have people around me who I am leading in one way or another, and the best way to lead them or influence them is to serve.
Some are born leaders, others may prefer to follow, but no matter where your gifts lie, we are all leading others in some degree or another. Especially as Christians, we are influencing those around us. We may be leading our peers without us knowing, or younger children in the Church. We are defiantly leading our younger siblings! They watch us and often follow our examples. We can even be leading older people with our good behavior.
This call to serve others is not just from my rooster, but it is biblical!
"Jesus called them together and said, 'You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.'" Matthew 20: 25-28
Jesus came to lead people to God, and he humbled himself to serve them. He is the greatest, the first, with all authority, because He displayed the greatest service of all: He gave His life as a ransom for many.
Lets lead others to know Christ more by following His example to be a servant to many.
