"He shall have dominion from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth." (Psalm 72:8) Canada was originally named the Dominion of Canada based on this verse, because the land stretched from sea to sea. It was founded as a Christian country - a country that feared God and sought to make His name great among the nation. In my civics' class, we had a short writing assignment: to write three reasons we are proud to be Canadians. Quite honestly, I found it hard. Not the writing aspect of the task, but what I am proud of. I'm proud that this country was founded as a Christian country, though now Christians are persecuted for preaching the gospel on the streets. I'm thankful that - so far - Canada is at peace and has not had war, although we have lost the battle of the flesh and of the devil. In the New Testament, Jesus performed countless miracles: healing thousands of the sick, restoring sight and sound to the blind and deaf, casting out demons, even raising the dead. During His time on earth, His presence changed the lives of everyone He came in contact with, and it continues to do so. Not as commonly known, God Almighty was very active in the Old Testament. When I recently read Exodus, I tried to take note of all the references to something God had done or promised to do. And there were a lot . So many that I was astonished. Fact is, God's providence surrounds us every step of our journey. He is orchestrating everything that happens, even if we don't know it or acknowledge it. We have a tendency to try to fit God into a box. The problem is that an infinite God cannot fit into the finite boxes we create. One way we try to limit God is by limiting His sovereignty in our lives. What I mean by that is that we try to make God do what we want Him to or expect him to act in the way we think He should act. We expect God to bless those who do good and curse those who do wrong; which isn’t against God’s nature except that we look for these blessings and curses in our physical day to day. The result of this type of thinking is disastrous, because God rarely gives us what we think we deserve. When we see a good person lose a loved one, struggle financially, or suffer an illness, we think God is either cruel; that the person had some secret sin, or they didn’t have enough faith. When we see a wicked person thrive in his evil doings, we think that God isn’t fair, God delights in evil, or God doesn’t see or chooses to ignore their sin (Psalm 73). We can easily think t...
