"And God said, Let there be light: and there was light." Genesis 1:3
I started reading Genesis this week and a thought popped into my head, why did God speak things into existence? God didn't need words to create things. Why did He use words? There wasn't anyone to hear them.
God wanted us to know that all things exist by God's word. The Word is powerful, true, brings light, brings order, creates good, is supreme and authoritative, takes the formless and brings form, and takes the empty to fill it. This Word is Jesus.
In the creation story we see the Trinity at work. We read that the Holy Sprit hovered over the face of the waters to prepare the earth (1:2), that God the Father was orchestrating and creating everything (1:1), and the Word of God spoke the world into existence, which was Jesus Christ (John 1:1-3). God used words to create the world, so that we would know Jesus Christ is the creator. God the Father didn't create the world on His own, we see all three persons, signifying one God who is creator over all.
But this leads to another question. Why is Jesus described as the Word? Why is that so important? We understand words and communicate with words. Jesus is God's way of communicating to man.
How does all of this apply to us? God, the powerful creator over all, who owns all, from the beginning of the world wanted to draw near to man in a relationship to reveal to us His character. He uses people to be His channel of grace. He pours out His love upon His worthless creation so that we in overwhelmed gratefulness might glorify His name. I can't type the glimpse of God's goodness I am seeing right now. Think about who God is - His holiness, power, sovereignty, and perfection. Now think about Genesis and about God's plan from the beginning to show us His love and grace and mercy through Jesus. Why me? Why humans? Oh, why would Jesus the Word of God would humble Himself to take on the form of His lowly creatures and die for those who hated Him! To God be all the glory!
Think about this this week. Think about God's redemptive plan. Take a moment to marvel and praise God that you are part of this plan and He chose to reveal Himself to you. Let this be your source of joy! Mortify the idols in your life (TV, busyness, your own plans, desires, and will, etc.) that take the place of God. Love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength (Matthew 22:37). It's easy to forget and grow dull to the gospel. Stay in God's word and be reminded daily of His love for you.
If you aren't a Christian, Jesus has died for all of those who would believe in Him. Look to Jesus, turn from your sins and live for Him.
"If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved." Romans 10:9
Sincerely, Brooke
